CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Food and Drug Administration filed a recall for a popular brand of gluten-free tortilla strips for possible gluten contamination.
The FDA recalled an unknown number of bags of Santa Fe style tortilla strips from the Fresh Gourmet brand, which is mostly known for its condiments.
The brand's manufacturer, Sugar Foods, was notified by a customer on Nov. 19 that some bags of Fresh Gourmet Santa Fe Tortilla Strips contained Fresh Gourmet Crispy Onions instead of the expected product. Although that mistake alone would be cause for concern, the major issue is that Fresh Gourmet's Crispy Onion product contains wheat, which contains gluten. The Santa Fe Tortilla Strips are advertised as gluten-free.
Since there was no allergen declaration for wheat on the bag for the Santa Fe Tortilla Strips (although there is on the Crispy Onion's package), the FDA was forced to recall them.
The specific product affected is: Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style, 3.5 ounce pouch, UPC code: 7 87359 17504 6, Best By June 20, 2025.
The bags were distributed between Sept. 30 and Nov. 11, and were sent to 22 states, including Ohio and Indiana.
The FDA said customers who purchased the product can return it to the place of purchase for a refund, or should otherwise discard the product.
The agency emphasized that those with gluten intolerance or a wheat allergy could have a serious or even life-threatening allergic reaction to consuming the product.
