MIAMI (TNND) — The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution Tuesday naming a street “President Donald J. Trump Avenue."
The resolution states that the City of Hialeah, Florida wants Miami-Dade County to install signs indicating the codesignation of a stretch of Palm Avenue as “President Donald J. Trump Avenue” on street signs and traffic light poles.
Four Democratic commissioners and five Republican commissioners voted in favor of the resolution, according to the Miami Herald. Republican Commissioner Kevin Cabrera wrote on X Tuesday the designation "serves as a lasting tribute to [President-elect Donald Trump's] leadership and vision for our nation."
Commissioner Marleine Bastien was the only Democrat to oppose the resolution, the Miami Herald reported. She reportedly said in her reasoning that “falsehoods about Haitians eating cats and dogs in Ohio” and “derogatory comments about Haiti, Mexico, and some African countries in the past” are examples of trauma inflicted on some citizens during the campaign season.
“I respect the fact that President Trump won the popular vote, the Electoral College and Miami-Dade County,” the Miami Herald quoted her as saying. “However, his victory does not erase the collective trauma that immigrants and citizens alike felt during this election cycle.”
Cabrera reportedly said before the board meeting that the resolution shouldn’t be controversial because other streets are named after politicians.
“President Donald J. Trump Avenue is a meaningful tribute to Miami-Dade's values of freedom and opportunity, reflecting a community that appreciates strong leadership,” he said, according to the Miami Herald.
The City of Hialeah voted for Palm Avenue’s codesignation last year, but waited until after the 2024 presidential election to request approval from Miami-Dade County, according to the newspaper. The approval reportedly allows the new name to have more prominence.
Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo celebrated the passage of the resolution Tuesday, writing on X the renaming of the avenue honors Trump's "steadfast commitment to putting America first and prioritizing the needs of the American people."
