SEATTLE — The American Heart Association is calling all women -- and those who support them -- to wear red on Friday, Feb. 4 as part of the annual Go Red for Women campaign to call attention to cardiovascular disease, the primary killer of women in the U.S.

According to the AHA, heart disease is linked to more deaths in women than all forms of cancer combined. It is also the leading cause of maternal death in the U.S.

KOMO TV will participate in the annual campaign on Friday by having on-air news anchors in red.

Look for photos of all of KOMO's on-air personalities wearing red on our social media pages.

The American Heart Association and Go Red for Women are also hostingthe Puget Sound Go Red For Women Luncheon.

The luncheon will be held on Monday, March 14 at the Westin Seattle. For more information or to purchase tickets visit their website.

The cause is an important one.

The American Heart Association recently noted an alarming decline in awareness about cardiovascular disease, particularly among young women. That's because women, especially women of color, are disproportionally impacted by heart disease and stroke and we know that many young women carry family responsibilities, leaving them less time to prioritize their health.

The Go Red for Women initiative is the American Heart Association’s signature women’s campaign to end heart disease and stroke in women. The group works in communities around the world to help women understand that cardiovascular disease is their greatest health threat and that they should take action to lower their risk.

The American Heart Association and Go Red for Women are committed to helping women reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease before, during and after pregnancy. They say it is important for women to prioritize their health and mental well-being during all stages of pregnancy.

According to the AHA, Go Red for Women has funded life-saving women’s research, advanced public health policy, championed closing gender gaps in research and STEM and created a platform for women to address their greatest health risk – cardiovascular disease over the past 17 years.
