Eminem's mother, Debbie Nelson, has died after a battle with advanced lung cancer, according to multiple reports.
TMZ broke the news on Tuesday, saying the rapper's mom passed away the previous night. She was 69 years old.
Eminem and his mother allegedly had a rocky relationship, as chronicled in his hit song, "Cleanin' Out My Closet." The lyrics of the song, which was released on his album "The Eminem Show" in 2002, highlight his childhood and upbringing.
In the first verse, he criticizes the way his mother raised him before launching into the chorus.
"I'm sorry, mama," he raps. "I never meant to hurt you. I never meant to make you cry, but tonight I'm cleanin' out my closet."
The second verse starts with information about his father, who he says abandoned them. He also claims his mother abused drugs, later adding that he "would never diss my own mama just to get recognition" but often witnessed her "poppin' prescription pills in the kitchen" when he was a child.
He also accuses her of having Munchausen syndrome, a mental disorder in which a person fakes illness or injury to gain attention and sympathy.
In the song, Eminem tells his mother that his daughter, Hailie Jade, is "getting so big" but "you'll never see her -- she won't even be at your funeral."
The music video for the song shows a young boy portraying Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, playing with toys on his bedroom floor. An actress depicting his mother violently comes into the room before dragging him across the floor.
The rapper made headlines in October when he spoke at a campaign rally held in Detroit in support of Vice President Kamala Harris. He spoke briefly before welcoming former President Barack Obama to the stage, saying people shouldn't be afraid to voice their opinions.
